Alain Ernoult is an adventurer. He travels around the world without ever going around in circles. Always open to evoke emotions, vibrations through capturing the light, a moment in time, and blending color for us to enjoy.

Everything began at the age of 17, when I embarked on an initiatory journey by hitchhiking from Normandy to Mali. My goal: to reach an isolated tribe, carrying a backpack filled with medicines to help them fight malaria.

“A wave of heat swept over me. Africa was an encounter in which every sense awakened and, suddenly, the soul recognized a lost echo. I felt the destiny I had mapped out for myself beginning to waver. There, the wind carries truths without words, and I finally learned to breathe the world differently.”

This formative experience shaped my vision and my humanist commitment, which have accompanied me throughout my life.

FIRST REVELATIONS

Back in France after several months of wandering, I realized that photography could become a universal language, a way of sharing what I felt and what I observed.The walls of my bedroom became my laboratory, the shadows my first companions.

Two years later, with my thumb raised, I set off for Africa once again. This time, my backpack contained not only medicines, but also rolls of film and a rudimentary camera, ready to capture everything through my lens.

I was burning with the desire to convey, to reveal invisible truths, to awaken consciences… through fragments of eternity, stolen moments, frozen forever on film, like memories that refuse to fade.

“NO LIMIT” PHOTOGRAPHER

I then turned towards more committed subjects. For decades, I travelled through the world’s fault lines, not to show the horror of war, but to draw out flashes of humanity.My reports, published in leading international magazines (National Geographic, The New York Times, Paris Match, Life, Time, Stern, El País…), have reached more than 600 million people.Rather than showing misery, I have always sought to capture moments of resilience; to enhance the scenes I witnessed without betraying them; to reveal the positive side and the glimmers of hope that emerge from even the most complex situations. This has always been my quest.

In Bosnia, in 1993, I was hit by a bullet. I survived, returning with one certainty: even when fractured, light is always stronger than darkness.Then the Amazon seized me. The helicopter carrying me deep into this green inferno crashed in the middle of the canopy. For five days, I wandered through the jungle, drinking water from vines and listening to the forest whisper things that humanity had forgotten.

That journey transformed me: the jungle had not killed me; it had taught me how to observe.

Nicknamed “No Limit,” I developed a form of action photography that placed me at the heart of events, defying gravity and fear to capture the instant when everything tips into the unexpected.With the Patrouille de France, I danced through the sky at 700 km/h and, aboard military jets travelling at 2,000 km/h, I captured the grace of pilots in the midst of loops and aerial manoeuvres.More than 3,200 flight hours have allowed me to create images in which adrenaline and poetry come together.

A MESSENGER OF EMOTIONS FOR A PLANET ON BORROWED TIME

In recent years, I have turned my lens towards the soul of the world, becoming a poetic witness to the state of our planet.

My work has focused on ecological issues and the preservation of biodiversity. My photographs from “The Sixth Extinction” and “Earth’s Doppelgängers”, exhibited in museums around the world, have reached more than 50 million people in two years.

In black and white, with pure lines, these powerful images capture the wild soul of our planet, highlighting animal beauty and the threats facing it, from the Arctic to the African savannah.

I have travelled to 130 countries, bringing an artistic and compassionate gaze to my work in an effort to raise awareness.

As a witness to the profound changes affecting our planet, I do not show the end, but what continues to shine despite everything. I strive to re-enchant the way we see the Earth.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

My work has earned me more than 100 international distinctions, including a first prize at the World Press Photo, a silver medal at the World Photography Cup 2026, and the World Nature Photography Award in 2023.

My photographs have been exhibited around the world, notably at the Palais de Tokyo (France), the Palais de la Découverte (France), the United Nations Headquarters in New York (USA), the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum(South Korea), the Shanghai Art Museum (China), as part of the European Capital of Culture programme (France), at the Musée des Arts et Métiers (France), the Musée Pierresvives (France), the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (France), during the official exhibition of the World Conservation Congress (France), at the Rencontres d’Arles (France), and at COP15 in Canada.

My photographs are also held in private collections around the world.

“An instinctive photographer, never quite satisfied, I sense that the ultimate photograph is still to come. It is by no means a quest for perfection, but an obstinate desire to keep moving forward, camera in hand, reaching towards the fleeting instant.”

I also founded and ran a press agency employing more than 400 photographers, which was later sold to Kodak US.

In 2022, I was appointed an Officer of the National Order of Merit by the French government.
